In 1965, Barbie went galactic four years before man landed on the moon. Miss Astronaut Barbie doll celebrated the excitement of the space program and exploring new frontiers. Dressed in a cool space suit and helmet, she showed little girls they could reach for the stars.
Space exploration continued to be a source of inspiration for Barbie who, in the following decades, held the role of astronaut, space engineer and many other related professions. In 2022, Barbie also embarked on her first mission to space. In collaboration with the International Space Station (ISS) National Lab on Mission DreamStar, Mattel sent two Barbie dolls up to space to encourage girls to consider a career in aerospace, engineering and STEM. The Barbie brand’s long history of celebrating space also includes the creation of dolls made in the likeness of real-life astronauts such as European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti.
