Barbie #1

In 1959, Barbie debuted at the New York Toy Fair. She wore a black and white striped swimsuit and her signature ponytail. Toy buyers were skeptical because Barbie was unlike the baby and toddler dolls that were popular at the time. They doubted she would be successful, but Barbie took the world by storm. Letting girls imagine their futures like never before from that moment on.

1959 Original Ensembles

The outfits you see on this wall are the original 22 ensembles made for Barbie’s 1959 debut.

Barbie had a team of talented designers who created looks just for her. They drew inspiration from haute couture and prominent fashion icons of the time to ensure that Barbie was always on trend. Each ensemble, complete with accessories was developed by one individual designer. The looks were then handpicked by Mattel founders Ruth and Elliot, and only those that were both stylish and practical to produce ended up in Barbie’s wardrobe.

Roman Holiday

Do you see Barbie’s tiny brass compact? This is one of Barbie’s rarest accessories. Measuring less than ½ inch, it is no wonder her miniature accessories were often misplaced.
